Rivard, Johnathan

Heritage:

Johnathan Rivard is a musician and multidisciplinary Métis artist born in 2005 in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. Raised in a family deeply rooted in Indigenous artistry, he was immersed in creative and cultural traditions from an early age. His father, Justin Rivard, a respected Cree jewelry artist, has been both an important influence and a mentor, guiding Johnathan’s artistic development and connection to culture.

Johnathan began playing acoustic drums at the age of seven, developing not only musical skill but also a deep appreciation for rhythm as a form of expression and connection. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoys hunting and hiking, finding inspiration in simply being immersed in nature, where much of his creative energy takes shape.

Johnathan’s work focuses on deerskin drums and handcrafted wood pieces. Working with a variety of wood species and Indigenous-sourced rawhide and leather, Johnathan creates pieces that are both powerful musical instruments and lasting works of art. Committed to continuous growth, his work is constantly evolving as he explores new techniques, materials, and creative ideas.
