Spirit Gallery was established in 1991, in the Village of Horseshoe Bay. Gallery owner Erin Sam, who grew up in West Vancouver, worked at the gallery part time while in high school. She has always been passionate about the gallery and kept her foot in the door, working when she could while she traveled and attended fashion design school.
Erin was asked to take over management in 1997 which is when she met her husband, Squamish/Kwakwaka’wakw artist Klatle-bhi. They married in 2000 and purchased the Spirit Gallery in 2003. They have 4 children who all spent the first couple of years at their mother’s side in the gallery. Erin’s mother, Deirdre McNeill, has been responsible for the beautiful window displays for over 20 years and is a big part of the gallery.
In 2008, Erin and her brother Brad McNeill also opened Sun Spirit Gallery, a small boutique gallery in Dundarave, West Vancouver. This gallery was closed in 2014 to allow more time to focus on corporate projects, private commissions and other endeavours. Brad still plays a large role behind the scenes of the Spirit Gallery’s on-line presence.
The Spirit Family has played a pivotal role in Spirit Gallery. David, Ann, George and Marcia have all been working at the gallery for many years, even decades. Many other wonderful staff have come and gone, each making a difference.
It is our hope that you enjoy Spirit Gallery as much as we do.
