Cee Pootoogook was born in 1967 in Cape Dorset on Baffin Island. Cee comes from an illustrious family. Both his mother Napatchie and his grandmother Pitseolak Ashoona were renowned artists. His sister Annie has become very famous in recent years.
Although Cee grew up watching both his mother and grandmother, it wasn’t until he registered in the Nunavut Arctic College drawing and printmaking diploma program that he realized carving was in his blood.
Cee says he prefers carving. Perhaps he has resisted the family pressure (which inspired his sister, Annie) to “keep the family tradition alive” and start his own tradition.
Even at this young age, Cee work has been exhibited nationally and in Germany.
