Heritage — Interior Salish
Carl Stromquist was born in Hope, British Columbia in 1969 and is of Interior Salish descent.
In 1992 Carl began producing Northwest Coast art in the form of paintings. Carl has studied under Salish artist George Pennier, and started carving wood in 1997. Stromquist has also collaborated with glass sculpture artist Douglas Baker, and has cast stainless steel with him as well.
Stromquist has been heavily influenced by the art of Robert Davidson, Dempsey Bob, Charles Edenshaw, and Bill Reid. He has a keen appreciation of Northern design and focuses on the forms and designs of his cultural heritage. Carl has also expressed a strong desire for the ancient Egyptian form that he reflects in some of his carvings.
